Remote Sensing and Modelling, Ground-based Aerosol Vertical Profile, Oil Sands Region
New ozone vertical profile data for stations in Edmonton, Alberta (Stony Plain); Kelowna, British Columbia and Churchill, Manitoba are available on the Portal. This update provides additional data at these sites covering the period from September 2011 to December 2013.
Ozonesondes are small, disposable instruments carried aloft on weather balloons which can reach heights of up to 35 km above the surface. In addition to ozone partial pressure as a function of altitude, the ozonesondes record temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and atmospheric pressure at various heights.
The regional ozonesonde data can be used to characterize ozone levels upwind and downwind of oil sands development, validate models of substance transport and transformation in the atmosphere, and aid in the interpretation of satellite measurements near the oil sands region.
